Life is a Broadway Musical
January 31st, 2007
Or at least it should be.
I’ve always thought the world would be a better place if people would break out into organized song and dance once in a while.
Light up my day with sunshine and *jazz hands*
Just thought I’d share that with you.
Since bloggers seem to be partial to lists, here’s my top 5 musicals of all times (in no particular order):
- West Side Story
- Rent
- The Sound of Music ( I played the second-to-last daughter, Marta, once)
- My Fair Lady
- Phantom of the Opera
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Okay, my mom has a huge thing for musicals. I think she liked Grease, My Fair Lady, and Phantom of the Opera. I could never really get into them. I think I saw Grease once. When we were at her house this past weekend, we were watching the Grease “Idol” thing…lol…Maybe I’ll rent the movie/musical Rent. I have never seen that….

Strange, I sometimes think life IS A MUSICAL, the way people go on around me sometimes….. Maybe I’m just inherently… bitter… ? ….
I think that rant is over. I haven’t seen nearly enough musicals in my time. Now is a good time for me though. I did go see a local version of Jesus Christ Superstar about two years ago though. They had local rock musicians perform for it, and it was pretty kickass. It was also refreshing to hear some of those melodies and arrangements being older. I guess from earlier on I couldn’t quite appreciate “I don’t know how to love him”, until I discerned what I like or don’t like about singing. I’m also nothing close to an authority on singing, much unlike our blog owner *wink wink* *nudge nudge* . ANYWAY! THE POINT BEING, I spent a long time just sticking to my guns. My guns are things like my Steve Vai albums. In light of all that here’s what I can offer for your daily dose.

I actually have this track, and it is fierce. It’s like Rock-jazz-fusion-extreme.

Don’t see the Rent movie! It was a terrible adaptation that left me awfully disppointed. The Fort Lauderdale production I saw even trumped it…

think you rubbed off on me with the show tunes…. about 2 years ago i got my hands on a CD and within 2 weeks was singing every song by heart. love it.
saw jesus christ superstar - trini style, orange sky jammed and it was pretty sweet. beauty and the beast is pretty good too if your a sucker for the cheese. my last new york trip i went to see Phantom of the Opera, the day wasnt going too well… actually it was and then i thought i got heartbroken by a random german tourist. very reluctantly went to see the show and melted. it was awesome. it was enchanting. german tourist who?

I didn’t like Rent. Maybe I’m some kind of capitalist pig-dog, but it’s like a group of people who revolt against the landlord because he won’t let them live in peace (i.e. don’t charge them rent). It’s like, if I need to live, it’s okay to wrong someone else, because I think they can make do without it. What foolishness. I think I’ll go knock over a Publix then.
Anyway, that’s flamebait, methinks. I like Phantom of the Opera best. I always picture that he’s using (a) spit, (b) mucus, or (c) Elmer’s glue to stick that thing on his face. And I always try to catch the one or two scenes when he takes it off, so you can see the inside of the mask…..maybe you can just make out a little green….
It’s true, but only for the women who can’t take a joke (also flamebait).
I’m digging myself a really deep hole here.
Please don’t publish my email….

Call me a weirdo. When I saw Rent on Broadway I acvtually envied those poverty-stricken near-homeless “artistes.” I was so overcome, I was like, I want to be poor and living in Alphabet City with nothing but my guitar and my wits just so I can FEEL. There was a purity to those Rent kids that really struck a chord with me and I’ve been searching for it within me ever since… Maybe I should just WHACK myself on the head a few times…

Well I have to say the perfect adaption to life as a musical was in a scrubs episode about two weeks ago. I will not give any more than that away, but you really must see it, the entire cast acts as though they are in a musical for the entire episode although I will not tell you why. If you can tivo it or download it, let me know and tell me what you think.

I didn’t see Rent. I saw Chicago. Chicago had Mya in it. and puppets. Chicago wins.
