Ode to Sesame Street
February 8th, 2007
Everyone one I know of a certain age in Trinidad is obsessed with Sesame Street and can quote entire sketches extemporaneously and with very little prodding.
I always find it fascinating (and more than a little disappointing) when I quote what I feel to be seminal moments of my childhood and no one in the U.S. knows what the heck I’m talking about.
Such examples include:
- “I love you from the bottom of my chicken”
- “In a hurry to be fed. Beedy eyes and big blue head.”
- “I have a dog. His name is Pete. He has four feet.”
- “Redheads are called carrot-tops even though carrot-tops are green.”
- “A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter. I remember, I remember!”
- “Sparky, it was you all the time!” (imagine me an alligator, alligator!)*
- “How could I be so dumb. Plants need water, man.”
- And this one’s for you Wod-Dow — “Straw is light and easy to carry.”
If I’ve left anything out, do be a dear and add them to the list.
And for those of you who are going WTF right about now, I say: Where’s your sense of HISTORY, MAN?
*Note that this is a link to a fellow Trini’s blog. Can you say UBIQUITOUS?

I sit with my boys(3 + 6) and take them through all the old Sesame ‘classics’ on YouTube. They absolutely love it. I had to play cookie monster in the library for them about 20 times! Trinis and Sesame Street - en twined forever!
