Why Lie?

“WHY LIE?

I NEED THE MONEY TO

BUY BEER AND POT.

GOD BLESS!”

~ Sign held up by a vagrant on the Third Street Promenade

I would have given him a dollar and taken his picture but I didn’t want to indulge such naughtiness. Though I must admit a part of me really wanted to tip my hat to the man.

The “God Bless!” was quite endearing.

Why lie? Indeed.

It’s not the end of the world.

A damn fine Judy Blume novel and one of my New Year’s Resolutions.

Nothing’s the end of the world except the end of the world.

Accept it and move on.

Down with Pedestrians

February 13th, 2007

They get in my way.

Nooooobooooody walks in LA, they say.

Pffffffffft.

Then why are there all these pro-pedestrian regulations, pray tell?

Now in Miami, where you can really say no one ever walks, there’s a good reason for it.

There, it’s an At Your Own Risk kind of activity thing.

On Jobbie-jobs

February 12th, 2007

I’m a bit pooped today. Not only did I meet with a recruiter but I spent the latter half of the day applying for jobs like mad.

The good thing is (imagine me patting myself on the back) is that I managed to get all the way from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach WITHOUT GETTING LOST ONCE.

That’s like a whole 10 miles! Anyone who knows me knows what a feat that was. No foibles to report here! (Yes, Weso, foibles).

Of course, getting back was an entirely other story — one which I cannot bring myself to share with the general public just yet.

Word to the Weather

February 5th, 2007

Now that’s more like it.

It’s a delicious 85 degrees in SM today and I’m all about it. You may find I post on the weather quite a bit. It’s a pet topic of mine. Ever since I moved to Miami and realized that in most places, the weather does vary from day to day, month to month, season to season (in Trinidad, it varies about 2 degrees for the entire year), I’ve made it a mission to follow the weather diligently.

on Santa Monica

February 1st, 2007

There a lot of homeless people in Santa Monica.

Okay I told you that already but here’s the interesting thing — there are a lot of people who LOOK homeless in Santa Monica but I really suspect they’re not.

And vice verse.

The homeless here are generally better dressed than any homeless I’ve ever seen.

For instance, I’m walking down the Third Street Promenade (kind of like Lincoln Road on South Beach) only to see a well-kept young man (wool suit, waist coat, hair brushed, acceptable amount of scruff) sitting on a bench talking into his headset.

Not homeless, right?

Then I realize… there’s no headset. And he’s not so much talking as he is preaching to an imaginary crowd. About Hitler and the end of the world.

DEFINITELY homeless?

Bit of a mindf*ck, no?

Or maybe just LA/Miami. How do I know? I’m not from either. Headline grabs you though, right? But it does seem to me that the rumors were true — people are nicer here.

Maybe Miami has made me “prickly” but I am just not used to people saying hi and good morning just because it’s nice. It’s more like, “What the hell do you want from me. And NO.”

In fact, not only does it rain in LA, it rained for over 12 hours straight yesterday — a Saturday. Kind of made me miss home.

One thing, though: LA rain has nothing on the sub-tropical torrential rainfall I’m used to.

If I’m going to be really honest, I can’t say it rained for 12 hours — it was more like a persisent, nagging, non-commital… drizzle. In Trinidad, we would call it paipsy.

You could stand in that LA rain for 2 hours and still not get wet. Doesn’t make any sense.

Give me a 3PM Miami thunderstorm any day.
